Looking for a Good Houston Auto Mechanic

car.jpg

My relationship with my car is something like a father’s with an adolescent daughter. Please God just tell me everything’s great cause if it’s not I just don’t think I can handle it. So on this, the six-month or so anniversary of the ominous arrival of the check-engine light I’m ready to seek professional help. The thing is, who to turn to? I have no idea. So as an experiment who better to turn to than the collective power of the Metroblogging Houston crowd? Anyone? Anyone? I prefer to local mechanic somewhere in reasonable proximity to Rice Village area. The comments are open.

I’ve struggled to find a good mechanic in this area as well. I used to go to a mechanic at Firestone on Kirby, but I always felt like I was getting ripped off a little. I didn’t realize how much a good mechnic made a difference until I went just down the street to a mechanic named Eric’s Auto Shop ( right by Rice Epicurean at Kirby and Holcombe ). They fixed a broken headlight of mine on the spot for half the price and two times more friendliness than Firestone. They really saved my tail one day when I went to Chipotle ( also on kirby) and jacked up my undercarriage on those damn cement blocks in the parking lot. My crumpled up undercarriage was litterlly raking against the ground. I decided “Well shit, i’m not going to get on the highway”. So I went to Eric’s pissed off and thinking I was going to pay an arm and a leg. I walk in, and the guy instantly remembers me from my visit before for a saftey inspection. He fixes my undercarriage for FREE! I can’t tell you how happy it made me.

The Car Talk guys from NPR have a mechanic database on their site. You put in your ZIP code and the make of your car, and you get nearby mechanics, and you can read other people’s reviews:
