Alamo Drafthouse

Having never been to Alamo Drafthouse before, I thought I’d give it a try after my friends convinced me that it was worth a visit. Usually Saturday nights aren’t a movie-going type of night for me, but seeing as how I’m running a little low on cash, I didn’t have many other options.

Located in the West Oaks Mall (Westhiemer and Highway 6), the Alamo Drafthouse has a unique setup..

For those of you that haven’t been to the Drafthouse, it’s basically a movie theater that serves beer and real food. The food ranges from salads to pizzas. There’s also the traditional movie food such as popcorn, candy, and other completely unnutritious snacks.

Although the beer menu seemed appealing (I’m always up for a good Hefeweizen), I ordered a Coke and the margherita pizza. The thin crust pizza was much better than I expected, and the Coke was, well…Coke. The whole concept was very appealing to me. Rather then having people directly in front of you, there was a table to put your food and drinks. There was also additional space so that the waiter/waitress could walk back and forth and pick up any orders during the movie. I’d have to say that’s the best part – not having to worry about getting up in the middle of the movie to get a refill or more food. The service wasn’t exactly speedy, but it was acceptable.

The prices for food and admission are reasonable, although the movie theater experience isn’t quite the same. The screen is smaller, and the sound isn’t as loud as other theaters. However, I’d have to say these trade-offs are worth going to the Drafthouse every once and while. Maybe it’s not the ideal setting for watching a big action movie, but for the movie we were watching (Lucky Number Slevin – great movie!), it was good enough.

Hell, yeah. The various Alamo’s in Austin have been our favorite place to see movies for the last several years. I don’t know about the Houston incarnation, but they put on some really cool screenings outside of the usual stuff here. Meeting John K. of Ren & Stimpy fame last August was particularly cool.

I looooove it there! Having someone refill my drink for me makes it worth the trip over there. Glad you enjoyed yourself.

The Alamo is completely awesome. Don’t forget all of the cool/weird things they play all the time like Tuesday night free anime and Tromatic Thursdays.

It’s great when they add the live action comedy to certain movies.

We go regularly and have introduced quite a few friends to it. My only problem with them is they changed their fries in the last year – the showstring version they had before were so much better.

I saw Freddy vs. Jason there – lots of fun. They just built a new one in Katy I think.
