Without Delay

Former House Majority Leader and 11-term Sugar Land Representative, Tom Delay, is expected to announce his plans to resign from his elected position and not seek re-election sometime tomorrow.

Although this news comes less than a week after his former deputy chief of staff pleaded guilty to conspiracy and corruption charges, the Washington Post is reporting that this did not affect his decision (but Nick Lampson did).

Former aides and sources close to DeLay said his decision was motivated not by Rudy’s guilty plea but by DeLay’s concerns that he might lose his suburban Houston seat to his Democratic opponent, former representative Nick Lampson, and his belief that another Republican could win instead.

You can read additional bits of information on the subject over at chron.com and the Seattle Times (and several other places once the word spreads a bit more).

One thing I find interesting is that, in the state of Texas, a Representative must be convicted of a felony, move out of his district or die to be removed from the November ballot. You would think that simply no longer being interested in serving the people (wink) would be enough to get you out of it.

So, thoughts anyone?

Yeah, but then we’d have no more politicians.
