They used to regularly hang out at Kaveh Kanes for Geek Gatherings, but Kaven Kanes is no more. So for November, they have selected Tropioca as the site of the Geek Gathering:

Tropioca specializes in bubble tea, coffee and smoothies. They also serve up desserts and free WiFi. For those not in the know, a Geek Gathering is exactly what is sounds like. The geeks from this show as well as a bunch of our listeners all descend upon a single location and geek out over gadgets, technology and the latest geek humor.

This month’s fun activity is to count the number of metal objects that Barrett has pierced his flesh with. You’ll never think of Barrett Time the same way ever again. (No cheating! No magnets!)

I may actually be there, since I’m not about to spend two hours in a dark room with people that would actually go out to see a Kyle Henry film.

Green chile festival time is probably the only time I get something other than a steak burrito with queso sauce or soft tacos. I indulged in chicken enchiladas with the gree chile sauce.

Good stuff, man. Although I did fill up on chips with the three deadly dips:

Creamy jalapeno. Gotta love it.

So, have you gotten down to Chuy’s yet to indulge in the festival?

This is what he forwarded me about his kittycats:

Michael Harren is a local podcaster (MikeyPod on the Bayou) and supporter of many civil rights issues. He is moving in August and sadly must find a home for his 2 cats.

Kitty: Female, spayed. I adopted Kitty about 8 years ago when I lived in the Heights. She was a neighborhood cat, and loved everyone. She used to follow me down the street and wait for me outside when I went to eat at a local restraunt. I took her with me when I moved from there. She is very good natured, and was an indoor/outdoor cat until about two years ago. She adapted perfectly to being indoor only. She is extremely laid back, and cuddly, and purrs whenever she is picked up….even at the vet!

Kali: Female, spayed. She is about 5 years old. She was found on the side of a freeway when she was teeny tiny and I adopted her on the spot. She is a little bit standoffish and gets spooked easily, but once she gets to know you she will be very cuddly. I don’t think she would be good to have around children, but she would be fine with adults. She has always been an indoor cat.

I will take both cats to the vet and get them checked out and shots up to date before I leave. I am planning to be gone for 6 months to a year, I probably wont come back to Houston and I can’t say for sure if I will be able to take the cats back. it would be great if they could stay together.

He can be reached at mikeypod (at) gmail (dot) com for further information.

Houstonist is having a meetup:

We’re working under the assumption that you haven’t made plans for after work Wednesday, Aug. 2, yet (and that if you have, you’re about to change them). Houstonist will be having our first happy hour that day — we’re calling it “Happyist,” because that’s how we roll — and you’re invited. Did we mention we’re buying you drinks?

So, the details: Come by Poison Girl between about 6ish and 8ish, have a drink on our tab (until the tab runs out, that is) and meet us Houstonists. We’ve been woefully slow in getting official Houstonist schwag, but we think we still have a couple of highly coveted Houstonist pinewood derby T-shirts and an orange vinyl Astodome coin purse we can give away. Uh, anyone wanna help us out with some prizes?

Houstonist Happyist
6-8 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 2
Poison Girl
1641 Westheimer Road

Perhaps if folks from Houston Metroblogs, the Chron.Commons, the Geeks Who Gather, BlogHouston, and Lone Star Times show up and ply him with much of a muchness of alcohol, he might be convinced to link to other local blogs a bit more often and build up the Bayousphere.

Game is on. Back by popular demand I am hosting another Sip ‘N Surf event this coming Wednesday, July 19, 2006. Still trying to figure out what to celebrate - 5th year of broadcasting my everything-but-computers tech show; mid-summer; Wednesday? Whatever the occasion I’d like for you all to join me at Downing Street Pub (Kirby @ Westheimer, next to Taco Milagro).

My favorite drink with alcohol content, Woodford Reserve Small Batch Kentucky Bourbon, will be iced down and sampled at your leisure (and their cost!). A special selection of cigars will be discounted plus I’ll bring some of the latest gadgets on the market. Yes, they have WiFi so feel free to sip and blog.

We had well over 300 people last time packing the house so be sure to get there on time starting at 5pm. The soiree goes until 8pm. Must be 21 or over and please drink responsibly.

“Please drink responsibly” kinda rules out Coors CEO Peter Coors, eh?
