Lawndale Art Studio Program

I know there’s a lot of artists out there who are not on the Lawndale Art Center’s mailing list so I wanted to post this really great opportunity for you all to check out. I’ll be trying to get in on the goods myself (so step your game up! ;-)

Lawndale is pleased to announce the second year of the Lawndale Artist Studio Program for Gulf Coast area artists. The program is part of Lawndale’s ongoing commitment to support the creation of contemporary art by regional artists. With an emphasis on emerging practices, the program will provide three artists with non-residential studio space on the third floor of the Lawndale Art Center at 4912 Main Street in the heart of Houston’s Museum District…

Artists have full access to their non-residential studios 24 hours a day, seven days a week, access to visiting artists, writers and curators. They will receive a $500 monthly stipend for the duration of the program and an initial $1500 materials budget. If accepted, artists are expected to spend a minimum of 16 hours a week in the studio. Each artist will also present a workshop to the general public the local arts community to share their practice or explore a related topic.

At the completion of the residency, the works produced during the program will be exhibited at Lawndale Art Center in May 2008. Lawndale Art Center will work with resident artists to create additional exhibition opportunites during their residency.

The term of the studio residency program will be nine months starting on September 4, 2007 and ending on May 30, 2008

Artists working in all mediums are encouraged to apply. Applicants must be 18 years or older and not enrolled in any degree programs. The residency is open to all artists living in Houston and the surrounding Gulf Coast area. Lawndale welcomes applications from artists in all stages of their careers. Former residents, Lawndale staff, members of the Lawndale Board of Directors, and artists scheduled to exhibit at Lawndale in 07-08 not eligible to apply.

The three residents will be selected by a panel of three arts professionals. The selection will be based on the quality of submitted work samples, statement of intent and references.

A non-refundable application fee of $15 is due with the application and is payable by check or money order.

All proposals are due Wednesday July 11, 2007 at 4:00PM.

Successful applicants will be notified no later than August 2, 2007.

Studio program applicants should submit the application form, application fee, and a CD labeled with the artist’s name and containing the following:

* Application Form
* One page statement of intent.
* Curriculum Vita (C.V.)
* Image List (if applicable) indicating title of work, year completed, dimensions and medium.
* 6 samples of artwork sent as digital images and ordered in viewing priority. Image files must be in jpeg (*.JPG) format, no larger than 2048 x 1536 pixels at 72 dpi. Please submit only the images and do not submit PowerPoint presentations, Adobe slide shows or other additional software. For Video, send no more than 10 minutes of video on DVD or CD able to be played using Windows Media Player, QuickTime or a home DVD player.

All materials must be in digital formats to ensure review by the Juror Panel. Written material that should be submitted digitally as a Microsoft Word document (.doc) or Adobe PDF (.pdf) and should be readable using Microsoft Windows.

Self-Addressed Stamped Envelope for return of materials is optional. If not included, materials will be disposed of after review.
