2006 Houston Dragon Boat Champions!
I hate to say I told you so, but, I told you so…
For the second year in a row, the Asia Society Young Professionals Team are champions of the 6th Annual Houston Dragon Boat Festival & Race! The winning time for the final race was 1:01 against the team from El Paso Energy.
The front page of today’s Chronicle has a photo of our team paddling to victory!!
Saturday morning’s severe thunderstorms made Buffalo Bayou unsafe for boats, so races were postponed to Sunday. But despite the weather glitch, it was a great turnout at Allen’s Landing with more than six Dragon Boat teams competing for the Championship. Opening ceremonies included welcoming remarks from the Texas Dragon Boat Association, Buffalo Bayou Partnership, [everyone’s favorite] former City Council Member Gordon Quan, Carol Alvarado and Mayor Bill White.
This Saturday, the Dragon Boat Championship Cup will be presented to Team Asia Society Young Professionals during the Astro’s game against the Colorado Rockies at Minute Maid Park. Yay!
For anyone unfamiliar with Dragon Boat Racing in Houston, I highly recommend checking it out. It’s a great way to be a part of a team, get some exercise and gain appreciation for Houston’s parks along Buffalo Bayou. Plus, the renovations to Buffalo Bayou from Sabine to beyond Allen’s Landing in Downtown are beautiful – to my fellow runners of Houston, we have a new running route!
