ISO: Someplace French
I have a friend from Montreal visiting in a few weeks and I’d like to take him to someplace French. Any recommended restaurants, clubs or places in Houston? Oh wait… I know someone at the General Consulate of France’s office on Post Oak… maybe they will have some recommendations!?
UPDATE ~ I called my contact at the French Consulate office and he recommended the following places: Bistro Moderne, Le Mistral, Café Rabelais (Karen also mentioned this place), Chez Georges. Also, March is “Célébration de Francophone“! Who knew?!
Merci to the excellent recommendations from everyone.
Not exactly French but close — there’s an awesome Belgian cafae in the Montrose on Westheimer right across the street from Buffalo Exchange — they serve amazing food and some French and Flemmish beer. Can’t remember the name but Yum!
Two in the Rice Village area: Cafe Europa and Rabelais.
The Belgian restaurant is called Cafe Montrose. It used to be my favorite place in town for dining/lunching when I was feeling homesick for Belgian fries and mussels.
The couple of times that I ate there the service was embarassingly bad, the food wasn’t that great and I got charged extra for stuff that shouldn’t have been on my bill.
In a word: it was t.e.r.r.i.b.l.e.
So bad, in fact, that I wouldn’t recommend checking it out. I am supremely bummed out about this.
I’ve always liked La Madeleine’s, even though it’s a chain. There’s one in the Village right on Kirby. Another on Westheimer just inside the Beltway
Also Andre’s Bakery I think. Of course I last went to the one off Westheimer ages ago.

There’s a place on Westheimer, I think it’s called Le Cep. Pretty good and nice ambience.

Have fun!!!
Thanks Laura! I’ll check it out.
You know, he can probably have French food anytime. Why not take him for some “only in Texas” grub – like TexMex, BBQ, etc.?
Serena: You have a very good point! I will make plans to take him to Goode Company’s BBQ as well as Ocean Palace, several Indian places, and take him shopping at Texas Junk for a pair of cowboy boots!
