National Night Out

National Night Out 2005

Tonight Houstonians will turn on porch lights and venture outside for National Night Out, an annual, nation-wide event designed to promote neighborhood safety.

The Purpose of National Night Out is designed to:

Heighten crime and drug prevention awareness;
Generate support for crime prevention;
Strengthen neighborhood spirit and police community relations; and
Send a message to criminals letting them know that neighborhoods are organized and fighting back!

You can get involved in a variety of ways:

Get all of your neighbors to turn on their porch lights.
Meet your neighbors by attending a block party or hosting a barbecue.
Encourage your kids to get involved. Ask them to make posters and yard signs for the event.
Invite local law enforcement to talk about crime prevention.

More than just a feel-good goal, NNO has improved neighbor relations in many neighborhoods and actually worked to lower crime by fostering an “I got your back” attitude among the strangers that often live next door.

    Why do they have to do it during the hottest month of the year? Why can’t they hold NNO in February or March?
