Mega Latino

My boss listens to Walton & Johnson in the mornings on Rock 101 KLOL. Or, he did.

We all got in his car this afternoon on our way to lunch and the radio is blaring what, to us, sounds like Tejano music. Since he’s normally Mr. Rock ‘N’ Roll, we made fun of him at first, but then realized the radio was tuned to 101.1 FM. He was the most dumbfounded, because he’d listened to Walton & Johnson just this morning. After the song was over, a voice came on and said Mega Latino 101 FM. Someone pointed out that KLOL was one of the first FM stations in Houston. Was there any kind of announcement that the station had been bought or was changing? Apparently, even their Web site reflects the change.

I’m not a KLOL listener, but I heard the news of the station’s demise this afternoon on KTRH. I wouldn’t be surprised if they didn’t announce anything. I posted on my site when KRTS, the classical station, went off the air in September and I still get people hitting up my blog looking for answers about that one. I guess the radio stations want to keep it to themselves. I’m a little surprised about KLOL though. It has been around for so long.

I noticed the change this morning too, and blogged about it ( http://www.uebelhart.net/index.php?p=72 )

It is a shame, especially when they were advertising this week for adtime. Anyone that bought adtime expecting to get a certain demographic is now screwed.

    Another Media Giant killing Houston.
    Houston Post= Dead.
    Public News= Dead.
    KRTS= Dead.
    97 Rock= Dead.
KKZR (Z Rock Metal Radio)= Dead.
    101 KLOL (Album Rock)= Dead.

    What Next?

(Also kind of ironic that their advertising blitz for the last few years has been for Houston’s Oldest Radio Station, and the Oldest Station in Houston without a Format Change).

I didn’t realize I was going to receive so many comments when I originally posted this. But let me just add my own two cents. I rarely, if ever, listen to commercial radio. I listen to 88.7 for NPR and 90.1 for a few of its programs. The rest of the time I’m listening to Internet radio or I’ve got a CD going. While I don’t wish failure upon Clear Channel, I do wish failure on the way they do radio, because I believe it is hurting music and the music industry.

Brian: Don’t forget KPFT, which blew up the great “Sound of Texas” format for whatever it is that they do now.

I am all for a new station that keeps up with the growing demand for latino music but why the fuck did they have to take off the oldest running radio station to put that shit on. Rock 101. has become a piece of Houston’s History. I grew up listening to Rock 101 and several people i know have grown up listening to rock 101 then those bastards up at clear channel, who is only after a quick buck, had to go and fuck everything up. Clear Channel need to know how people feel about this. We need to get our station back. I know this is probably not the best thing to get all upset about but we arn’t talking about a station that has been on the air a few years we are talking about history. WE NEED OUR ROCK 101.1 KLOL BACK NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!

Especially bring back Walton & Johnson! They kick major @ss! This really pisses me off. Clear Channel sucks!

*******I also LOVED 101.1 KLOL rock especially the morning show used to make me laugh on my way to work. Buy hey change is change get used to it and stop crying. It is about time that we get a station for younger latin people!!! Not all that old people spanish music. I go with the FLOW and I actually LIKE the new format. I’ll listen to the MEGA KLOL.*******

I wasn’t thrilled at the demise of Stevens and Pruett or the changes after KLOL changed hands, but KLOL has been an American Institution for over 30 years. Taking away something that has withstood that many years of listeners, complaints, and critical changes is just plain STUPID. Bring KLOL BACK!

I hated the fact that stephens got kicked out. I got over it. When boner and Pruitt were booted…that sucked a@@. But now, OVERNIGHT, the station is gone? since i was a kid, i have loved the runaway radio. BRING IT BACK.
